The murder of journalist & activist, Gauri Lankesh at her home in Bengaluru, (Bangalore) the capital of the southern Indian state of Karnata, has again put the spotlight on the saftey of Indian journalists. The shooting of the well respected editor and critic of right-wing Hindu extremism has been condemned widely by media groups, leading to a number of protest demonstrations and global condemnation from groups including Amnesty International, s, the Comittee to Protect Journalists, the International Federation of Journalists and Reporters without Borders (RSF).
The IAWRT is offering financial support to members undertaking professional development studies, or media leadership and management skills training in 2016. IAWRT scholarships are available to members of more than two years standing, who are from the global south.

Healthy women in media has been a strong focus for IAWRT Nepal in its ongoing activities. Yoga has been harnessed by the IAWRT Nepal chapter to assist women journalists who reported on the massive earthquake which struck Nepal on 25th April 2015.
The 60th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is being held in New York from 14 to 24 March 2016. IAWRT's parallel event, Gender inequality in the media: Exploring strategies for change, will be held at 12.30, on March 17 2016.

IAWRT member, Bandana Rana is thrilled by the recognition of her decades of activism on women’s rights in Nepal by being honoured as a ‘Women of Distinction’ by the NGO Committee on the Status of Women, New York (CSW/NY).
A new edition of the 'Safety Guide for Journalists: a handbook for journalists in high-risk environments' is available. The guide says that violence against female journalists is a “double attack” on their sex as well as their profession. Throughout the guide there are practical tips for women in the field.

IAWRT Uganda chapter signs MOU with HRNJ-Uganda
The IAWRT Uganda Chapter and Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda (HRNJ) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together on projects that promote the rights of the country's journalists.
Increasing trust in journalism
One of IAWRT's partner organisations, the Ethical Journalism Network (EJN) has restructured and refreshed its website. Its aimed at strengthening capacity to build trust in journalism as a cornerstone of free expression and quality communications.
The member of the month is IAWRT India's first new member for 2016, a photographer and art historian, and teacher in film, photography and story-telling - across media.
The Inaugural IAWRT African Film Festival introduced an amazing diversity of black women: trendy fashonistas in Manhattan; a woman who takes on champion wrestlers in a Burkina Faso village; an Egyptian woman taking us through the unrest and a South African 'virgin-vegan'. Women questioned or tested their relationships, their sexuality, and women’s roles in their homes, in their cultures and in politics.
A new challenge
Ananya Chakraborti, the Vice President of IAWRT International, has accepted a new position as the Chairperson of the West Bengal Commission for the Protection of Child Rights. Ananya says she is looking forward to the challenging assignment.
IAWRT long documentary 2016-17
The rough shape of IAWRT’s Long Documentary, 2016-17, is promising fascinating insights from around the globe. Four international directors located in Philippines, Cameroon, India and Canada are making making features.
The Executive Producer for this film, Nupur Basu, explains how she proposes to connect the stories; "Tying up these local narratives from Cameroon, Philippines, India and the US/Bangladesh will be interviews with award winning international women journalists who will describe the challenges and achievements of covering world events from some very difficult war torn zones and difficult political regimes.”

The 13th IAWRT Asian Women's Film Festival will take place in New Delhi from 2-4 March, 2017 at the India International Centre. The festival will showcase the works of Asian women directors living in any part of the world.
