The murder of journalist & activist, Gauri Lankesh at her home in Bengaluru, (Bangalore) the capital of the southern Indian state of Karnata, has again put the spotlight on the saftey of Indian journalists. The shooting of the well respected editor and critic of right-wing Hindu extremism has been condemned widely by media groups, leading to a number of protest demonstrations and global condemnation from groups including Amnesty International, s, the Comittee to Protect Journalists, the International Federation of Journalists and Reporters without Borders (RSF).
Yasmine Ryan, an IAWRT member and freelance print, tv and multimedia journalist, says she is "humbled and honoured" to be selected as a World Press Institute Fellow for 2016.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has launched its annual publication, Attacks on the Press: Gender and Media Freedom Worldwide for 2016. Through a number of thought provoking and personal essays, the edition examines sexualized violence, online harassment and the intersection of gender and press freedom.
Women Making News
IAWRT is seeking applications for the position of Executive Producer for the 2016 IAWRT long documentary with the theme, women making news, which is designed to allow filmmakers to focus on the daily struggle which female media practitioners experience in newsrooms.
The IAWRT is offering financial support to members undertaking professional development studies, or media leadership and management skills training in 2016. IAWRT scholarships are available to members of more than two years standing, who are from the global south.

Healthy women in media has been a strong focus for IAWRT Nepal in its ongoing activities. Yoga has been harnessed by the IAWRT Nepal chapter to assist women journalists who reported on the massive earthquake which struck Nepal on 25th April 2015.
Respected Iraqi woman journalist held for 9 days
A respected Iraqi woman journalist Afrah Shawqi al-Qaisi was released by kidnappers in January, nine days after being abducted by gunmen from her home.
Safety for Women Media Workers
Egyptian journalist, and IAWRT board member, Abeer Saady, has delivered safety training to journalists working in hostile areas in numerous Middle Eastern countries over many years. She has shared her long experience and skills in safety training at IAWRT gatherings in India and Nepal and most recently at the Johannesburg regional conference in South Africa in October 2016.
Planning for the NGO gathering parallel to CSW 61
IAWRT has begun planning for its event in New York, alongside the 61st CSW being held between 13-24 March 2017 in New York, USA..
The Johannesburg media came to the party at the IAWRT South African regional conference on October 26.
However, it was not because it promoted the event, but because it demonstrated how quickly women are reduced to stereotypes and the need for such professional meetings amongst female media professionals.
