The South African chapter of this global organization for women working in electronic and allied media, is made up of women in television, film production, broadcasting and commissioning, as well as media students .
The organization’s main mission is to strengthen initiatives towards ensuring capacity building in media, ensuring women’s views and values are an integral part of programming in community media and to advance the impact of women in media. The collective has members living in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria and has been active since 2008.
After hosting a successful maiden HERAfrica International film festival for female African filmmakers in 2016, the chapter is excited to grow the festival and develop the initiative into a roving festival through Africa as well as occupying residency within established festivals.
Activities in the past have included film screenings of members films and the IAWRT documentary on reproductive health, a film production workshop, writing workshops, a yoga retreat and taking part in the data gathering for the Gender Mainstreaming project.
IAWRT- South Africa is passionate about creating networking spaces for skills exchange, sharing ideas on women’s development and providing opportunities for women to showcase their art, skills and films to a wider audience.
